Wow, we had a very productive weekend in the vineyard. I rented a one-man post hole digger to make the job of digging 6 end post holes, 3 line post holes and 24 planting holes a bit easier. Also needed to make sure I broke through a couple sections of hardpan.
The post hole digging machine was an experience. It made the actual digging of the holes go so much easier, but it was heavy and bulky and working a pretty good slope with it was an adventure. It was equipped with an oil level safety switch which would shut the engine down if the engine was not leveled. So for each hole, the machine needed to dragged into position and set up with rocks and/or wooden boards to get it level enough to stay running. The it would get stuck on a rock in the hole and the auger would need to be man-handled out. An excellent workout for the muscles.
2 weeks until the vines arrive! And of course I am not quite ready. The trellises need to be configured. The 3 different vines need 3 different trellis systems to grow and thrive. Norton thrives on the Geneva Double Curtain. Chambourcin likes Top Wire Cordon and the Chardonnel prefers Mid Wire Cordon.
Heavy rain is predicted for both days for next weekend so I may not be able to get the trellises done. The important thing is the ground is ready and the wires can be strung after planting if necessary.
